What is phonics?
Words are made up from units of sounds called phonemes. Phonics teaches the relationship between letters and these sounds.
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and effectively through:
1] Recognising the sounds that individual letters makes.
2] Identifying the sounds that different combinations of letters make - /th/, /ph/.
3] Blending these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Research shows that when phonics is taught in a systematic structured way- starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex sounds- it is the most effective and efficient way of teaching young kids to read.
What is Synthetic Phonics?
- Synthetic Phonics teaches kids to read words by breaking them up into smallest individual sounds and then blending the sounds together. Kids can then understand the link between written texts and verbal language.
- For example, in the word cot, kids learn to identify 3 individual phonemes: /c/ /o/ /t/ , which are then blended to form a full word.
- It focuses on encoding and decoding language.
- It starts from the word parts and builds them upto the whole word.
What Is Analytic Phonics?
The Analytic Phonics method teaches children the phonic relationships among words. It teaches children to identify a pattern. For example, if the child knows "bat", "cat" and "hat", then the word "mat" will be easy to read.
